In "The Old English Baron", we follow the adventures of Sir Philip Harclay, who returns to medieval England to discover that Arthur Lord Lovel, the friend of his youth, is dead.
The book has all the traits that will dominate the coming decades in English Gothic literature in a young man's effort to rectify past-life injustices caused by people without morals.
It was a book that in its time was greatly underestimated, but of tremendous impact; As much as we see the model of the story as traditional today, it was a pioneering work in the novel.
